What is a home rewire?

A full home rewire brings the electrical installation in your property up-to-date with the latest wiring regulations.  It will also give you the opportunity to modernise your home with a new consumer unit containing residual current devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers, additional sockets to suit your needs (including USB sockets should you so wish) and the most up-to-date, modern wiring available. It will also give you complete peace of mind that your electrical systems are safe and the risk of fire is reduced.

Building control

A full rewire has to be notified to the local building control department so that it meets the appropriate safety standards. As Home Rewires is registered with a competent person self-certification scheme authorised NAPIT we will self-certify that notifiable work is safe and complies with the Building Regulations. When using a registered electrician, you do not need to notify a building control body. Once the works are complete we will arrange for you to receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate within 30 days, and for your local authority to be notified about the work for its own records. We will also provide you with a completed Electrical Installation Certificate to show that the work has been tested for safety.

Rewire process

A full house rewire consists of two processes, the ‘First and Second Fix’, a term commonly used in the construction industry.

First fix

The first process is usually completed before walls are plastered and ideally should be done without furniture or carpets, so if you are moving into a new property, we would advise that you have the property rewired before adding furniture, to avoid any future problems.

Wiring is installed as well as back boxes for all sockets and switches in your property.

Second fix

Once the first fix stage has been completed, the property can be re-plastered or the walls and ceilings filled and made good, and the flooring replaced.

We then connect the electrics by fitting the switches, sockets, light fittings, the consumer unit and wiring any electric fans, cookers, extractor hoods, heaters and showers.

During a full house rewire, all existing wiring will need to be taken out and replaced with new wiring to ensure safety and alleviate any hazards. In addition, all sockets will be fixed, including on heat detectors, cooker points and lighting.
